Reaching for the top shelf. Fastening a seatbelt. Casting a line off the jetty. Rolling onto that side at night. When your shoulder hurts, you suddenly notice how many times a day you use it, and how much you've started working around it.
Let's look at why shoulders get cranky, and what we can do about it.
What's going on?
Your shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in your body: bones, tendons, ligaments, and muscles working together to connect your arm to your torso. That freedom of movement also makes it easier to strain. Common contributors include:
- Overuse from work, sports, or repetitive reaching
- Muscle and tendon irritation around the rotator cuff
- Posture and upper-back stiffness that change how the shoulder moves
- Neck issues, because nerves that serve the shoulder and arm start in the neck
- Past injuries or falls
How we help at Gilmore Chiropractic
We start with a thorough exam to pinpoint where the pain is coming from. Depending on what we find, your plan may include:
- Chiropractic adjustments for the shoulder, upper back, and neck
- Acupuncture with Dr. Funk
- Exercise rehab and physical therapy techniques to rebuild strength and range of motion
- Massage therapy to help ease muscle tension and support recovery
- Shockwave therapy when soft-tissue irritation may be involved
- Soft tissue work and stretching
- Functional neurology with Dr. Matthews when coordination or nerve-related symptoms are involved
If your exam suggests a tear or something that needs imaging or an orthopedic opinion, we'll tell you and help you find the right next step.
What to expect at your first visit
- A detailed history: how it started and what movements bother you.
- A movement and strength exam of your shoulder, neck, and upper back. Imaging only if needed.
- A plain-language explanation of what we think is going on.
- A plan that includes what to do (and avoid) at home.
