Maybe it's the stiffness when you first get out of bed. Maybe it's the twinge when you lift the grandkids, load the cooler for a day at the beach, or sit through a long drive on US-1. Back pain has a way of quietly shrinking your day: you start skipping things, bracing before you bend, and wondering if this is just how it's going to be now.

It doesn't have to be the whole story. Let's walk through what might be happening, and what a visit with us actually looks like.

What's going on?

Your lower back carries a lot. It's where your spine, discs, joints, muscles, and nerves all meet, and it handles nearly every move you make. When one part isn't moving well, the others try to make up for it, and that's often when pain shows up.

Common contributors we look at include:

  • Joints that aren't moving well: stiff or restricted spinal segments can irritate surrounding tissue.
  • Muscle tension and guarding: muscles tighten to protect a sore area, which can keep the cycle going.
  • Posture and daily habits: desk work, driving, phones, and how you sleep all add up.
  • Disc or nerve involvement: sometimes pain travels into the hip or leg, which tells us to look more closely (see our Sciatica and Herniated Disc pages).
  • How your nervous system controls movement: balance and coordination play a bigger role than most people realize.

Every back is different. That's why we don't start with a treatment. We start by understanding yours.

How we help at Gilmore Chiropractic

Depending on what we find, your care plan may include:

  • Chiropractic adjustments to help restore motion in stiff joints
  • Functional (chiropractic) neurology with Dr. Matthews, looking at how your brain and nervous system coordinate posture and movement
  • Acupuncture with Dr. Funk, which many people use to help ease muscle tension
  • Massage therapy to help ease muscle tension and support recovery
  • Shockwave therapy when soft-tissue irritation may be involved
  • Vertebral decompression (gentle traction) when discs or nerve pressure may be involved
  • Soft tissue work, stretching, and rehab exercises so you can keep your progress at home
  • Nutrition guidance to support your overall recovery

The goal is a plan that fits your body and your life, with options that are non-invasive and drug-free.

What to expect at your first visit

  1. A real conversation. We'll ask about when it started, what makes it better or worse, and what you're missing out on.
  2. A thorough exam. Posture, movement, orthopedic and neurological checks. If imaging is needed, we'll explain why.
  3. A clear explanation. You'll leave knowing what we think is going on, in plain language.
  4. A plan you agree to. We'll talk through options, how often you might come in, and what you can do at home.
